Anyone here watch LA Fish guys?  Well a few of us here do, and we are trying something we saw on the show here in the store.  They called the creation an algae scrubber, and the idea is to grow algae on a screen outside of your tank, instead of inside on the glass, assisting in nutrient export, etc.  Who doesn't want to scrub the glass less, right?

We built one and wanted to share the information with everyone here.  It's been up for about three weeks now and as you can see in the pictures, we are growing algae on our screen and we have definitely had less algae on the surface of the acrylic tank.

On the flip side, we were concerned that the algae growth in the scrubber would take the nutrient away and prevent the macros from growing in the fuge.  Strangely, this hasn't been the case, the macro is still growing in the fuge and all appears to be well.

We will keep posting pics and updating this blog to keep everyone informed on the success/failure of the scrubber.  Feel free to chime in with questions, or insights if you have tried this at home!

Sorry the pics are so small, they won't upload at full size and stretching them makes them too blurry.

I'll be interested in hearing about what kind of results you get! Are you going to do any pre and post testing?

I built a version of an ATS on my tank and took it down a month or so ago. Had it running for about 3 months and had a really good stand of Algae growing on it weekly. It did keep my Nitrates down and seemed to do everything I needed it to but took it down because of the noise, maintanence and the excessive evaporation it causes. A good splash guard would have fixed some of these issues but o well. Got all my info on them from www.algaescrubber.net/forums/ some good info and builds there.

Just about to post that forum.

ATS is a great concept that works, and works very well. Like you said though, it's got maintenance that has to be done to it weekly. Eventually, I'll have a gravity return to the tank style ATS, since these are pod havens, and It'll be less damage on them to get into the tank. Otherwords, I'll have this mounted above the tank.

The santa monica design the guy sells works freaking awesome, and if your any good at acrylic fabrication, its not hard to make. On another forum a guy used what you did - pvc pipe some plastic screen all roughed up, and a couple compact florescent on clips on side of the tank - for a customers tank and it was so successful that the customer chipped money in to get a better one built.

As breeding side of it, these allow you to feed alot more and not have the usual back lash once its up and running, which takes a good month.
