There's Plenty of ways you can hurt a man and bring him to the ground. You can beat him, you can cheat him, you can treat him bad, and leave him when he's down. But when things start dying in his aquarium...now that is scarry enough to make any man cry.

As Halloween approaches I find myself exceedingly scared about what is going on inside of my tank. Today I had my third peppermint shrimp cloud up and die mysteriously.

Per the request of previous readers, I will include in this blog pictures of: my "pleasingly purple" sand... which is now also experiencing a diatom bloom as well, A pic of my small sps frag, as well as a pic of my baby snails, and my flourishing mushrooms.

I did a 20 percent water change yesterday, which shortly after I experienced a diatom bloom. My frog spawn has all but died at this point... no surprise there, my tank is very young still.

All of my snails seem to be growing very quickly on the plus side.

I am still plaugued by these mysterious shrimp deaths, all of my equipment is fairly new, so I do not think it could be current, though the rubber end cap did fall off my heater ( the rubber bumper cap distal to the control nob end). There does not appear to be any fractures in the glass however.

After some suggestions I have removed the parasitic starfish that was on my turbo snails shell.

As of today my chems are as follows:

pH : 8.3

Nitrite: 0ppm

Ammonia: 0 ppm

Nitrate: 5 ppm

Salinity: 1.0245

Temp: 76

coraline wont budge if you aim a power head at it. cyano will blow off.

And I will second that be patient statement. Only bad things happen fast in a reef tank.

I guess my old sunday school teacher was right... Patience is a virtue..

Thats a bummer.. from the photos it does look like you are having a cynobacteria bloom. I would imagine that is consuming your phosphates (which is why you are testing low). What test kit are you using btw? I would imagine if you are still getting diatoms you are still going through the "new" stages of your tank. It would probably be best to slow down a little and let the tank balance out.

A little blog tip: if you make your photos 600p wide they fit perfectly in the blog and show up nice on the forum as well. Great job with the blogs though, keep it up!

Thanks for the response skipper! I figured my tank was still unstable. I am using an API saltwater test kit. I need to upgrade to the API Reef test, but am waiting on my next paycheck :).

As for slowing down... I know patience is a virtue, it can just be so hard to pull back on the reigns... lol. I will try harder to exercise some restraint.

For future reference, what is the best method for telling the difference between Cyano and Coraline algae?

As well, what is the best method for adjusting pixel size on my pics?

Thanks again for the responses!!
