Jellyfish tank?

I have a friend (non-reefer) who is possibly nterested in setting up a jellyfish tank. I know there are a few species that are kept "easily" and breed readily in captivity, but I have no idea what all goes into it. I know they need a kriesel style tank, are there any "out of the box" options available for the average consumer? Any input is appreciated.

I don't know much about them, but I saw this link a few weeks ago that might be interesting..

Looks like they have an "out of the box" solution: http://www.jellyfishart.com/

** Just noticed that's what brad's link essentially takes you to, doh!

wow 3 grand for that theres gotta be an easier way

Ben, upside downs (Cassiopeia sp.) can be done in a standard aquarium, are extremely hardy, reproduce constantly, and are by far the easiest, and cheapest species to do. They are warm water, photosynthetic, so they need a good light source, and need to be fed live artemia 2x/day. Baby brine is easy to hatch, but I'd tell them to allow at least 30 - 60 min./day or they will not be successful. All other species are going to be extremely labor intensive, almost all are cold water (~mid 50's), and are not easy to come by. Some have to have other jellyfish crushed up for a food source, to boot. Have them shoot me an email or PM if they are interested in pursuing this any further.

upside-down jellies are a great start at understanding and appreciating keeping these unique animals. research!!

Thanks for the advice everyone. The upside down jellies sound like a great option. I'm just not sure if he is aware of the cost/time commitment that it would take to be successful, being that he's never had a tank before. Maybe I will try it for myself first

What tank size and type of lighting would you recommend JD? I think I remember seeing some Cassiopeas under LEDs at the Monterey Bay Aquarium not too long ago.

Tank size is literally whatever, 10 gal. - 1000 gal., they will stay on the bottom 99% of the time anyway. My opinion for LEDs aside, yes they would work; PAR values around 100 are good enough. We are considering glass beads for substrate, as it might be easier to maintain, and is more artsy. There's no way to avoid aiptasia with the amount of food, and the lack of predation on them, and sand tends to stay dirty, regardless.
