Proper GFO use

Up until today I have simply used Seachem phosguard in my reactor. Wanting to also remove silicates I switched over to GFO but found it much more messy and smaller than phosguard. I did rinse it well and then kept it pretty packed together without room to tumble so it would not come apart. Is this correct? Should I first place GFO in a packed bag then place it in my reactor?

You want to have a very light tumble so the water going through comes into contact with all of the gfo. It doesn't take much water flow to get the gfo moving. I just get the surface moving a bit. To rinse I put dry gfo into the reactor and pump a couple gallons of rodi water through it until the water is clear.
