Ecotech Marine and Aqua Illumination merge

http://www.advancedaquarist.com/blog/ecotech-marine-merges-with-aqua-illumination

Pretty big news for the aquarium LED industry I'd say, hopefully it translates to (relatively) affordable, sustainable, and quality products for us hobbyists B)

Yea and to have lights that don't fail within the first year over and over again.

Merger of companies is usually not a good news as it slows down innovation and takes out competition that is healthy for consumer. I feel it as a loss as i really liked aqua illumination designs and price ranges while Ecotech is known for premium pricing on their products.

I hear you there...

I hope that since they are still maintaining seperate brands they can settle into their respective price points and not have to compete with eachother in that regard

I've seen this type of move many times in my years in the electronics industry. Don't expect to see much change at all on the consumer level.
These 2 companies either don't see themselves competing in the same market space (differing price points) or want to come to market 2 different ways (maybe 1 prefers direct to consumer and 1 prefers distribution to LFS). Both companies are smart enough to know that just eliminating a competitor is nowhere near as good as consolidating and dominating a market at 2 different levels.

Yea I don't see prices dropping anytime soon.

...its not even 1 April yet

This was exactly my thought when I heard the news. Less innovation and stable prices because no one is forcing the drop through competition. Only time will tell.

This reminds of a story somebody once told me about listening in to a breakfast conversation between four heads of trash pick up companies. They were basically deciding on price fixing so that no one undercuts other in competition. This was the case for the LCD TVs up until 2010 or so when they were doing price fixing so as no body can sell cheaper and drive the price down. I have a strong feeling that aquarium LED companies are doing exactly the same.

db, that's called collusion...a form of procurement fraud. Like companies taking turns winning bids. Not sure if it applies to the commercial world but it's a big no no on FedGov contracts.

Kessils are like $400 still
